THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION,

Having regard to the Treaty on European Union, and in particular Article 42(4) and Article 43(2) thereof,

Having regard to the proposal from the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,

Council Decision (CFSP) 2017/1869 of 16 October 2017 on the European Union Advisory Mission in support of Security Sector Reform in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) (OJ L 266, 17.10.2017, p. 12 ).

(1) On 16 October 2017 , the Council adopted Decision (CFSP) 2017/1869Council Decision (CFSP) 2017/1869 of 16 October 2017 on the European Union Advisory Mission in support of Security Sector Reform in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) (OJ L 266, 17.10.2017, p. 12 ). , establishing a European Union Advisory Mission in support of Security Sector Reform in Iraq (EUAM Iraq).

(2) On 7 April 2020 , the Council adopted Decision (CFSP) 2020/513Council Decision (CFSP) 2020/513 of 7 April 2020 amending Decision (CFSP) 2017/1869 on the European Union Advisory Mission in support of Security Sector Reform in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) (OJ L 113, 8.4.2020, p. 38 ). , amending the mandate of EUAM Iraq and extending it until 30 April 2022 .

(3) Following the Strategic Review of EUAM Iraq, the Political and Security Committee recommended that the mandate of EUAM Iraq be amended and extended until 30 April 2024 .

(4) Decision (CFSP) 2017/1869 should therefore be amended accordingly.

(5) EUAM Iraq will be conducted in the context of a situation which may deteriorate and could impede the achievement of the objectives of the Union’s external action as set out in Article 21 of the Treaty on European Union,

The strategic objectives of EUAM Iraq shall be:

This Decision shall enter into force on the date of its adoption.

Council Decision (CFSP) 2020/513 of 7 April 2020 amending Decision (CFSP) 2017/1869 on the European Union Advisory Mission in support of Security Sector Reform in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) (OJ L 113, 8.4.2020, p. 38 ).

Article 2 Article 2 Objectives

(1) to provide strategic advice and expertise to the Iraqi authorities on the civilian aspects of the Security Sector Reforms, including the National Security Strategy, associated national strategies and other national security priorities;

(2) to analyse, assess and identify opportunities for further Union engagement at national, regional and provincial levels in support of the needs of the civilian Security Sector Reform;

(3) together with the Union Delegation, to inform and facilitate the Union’s and Member States’ planning and implementation support in the field of civilian Security Sector Reform, ensuring coherence of Union action.;
